DAMON DARK
Adrian Sherlock notes " Damon Dark: The Pilot, is now complete.
Produced by Jennifer Douglas from the script by Adrian Sherlock,
the pilot features Bruce Hughes (Ocean Girl, On the Beach) as
Damon Dark, and is directed by Chris Langman and James Kalisch.
Jennifer Douglas is currently in Europe where she hopes to
interest television stations in buying the planned series.
Meantime, Damon Dark: The Special Edition is now ready for
release on video. This is a drastically re-edited version of the
three part "Maddox" serial from the Channel 31 version of Damon
Dark. Following the test screenings at Aussiecon Three, Jennifer
Douglas and Adrian Sherlock have recut the serial and added
incidental music composed by Mike Seager. The video is available

BULLSHEET MEDIA WATCH
Lucy Sussex interview with Mary Doria Russell appeared in
the Sunday Age 18/6/2000. Jack Herman, wearing his Press Council
hat, is quoted in an article on vulgar language in the press
(Sunday Life - The Sunday Age 25/6/2000). "We still get
f-dot-dot-dot, c-dot-dot-dot, and even s-dot-dot-dot." Eric
Lindsay notes "In the Tuesday Australian, June 6, 2000, page 63
is an article quoting extensively from "Former Telstra regulatory
affairs executive, now independent consultant, Peter Darling".
He said ADSL was being facilitated by Telstra's recent reduction
in the number of exchanges from 5000 to 200."

CONVENTION NEWS
Susan Batho reports on SynpOZium. "Yes it was a slash fan event,
but it was a good example of the Fan History Theory of Jerry
Kaufman: that fans in isolation keep reinventing fandom... it
was an early 70's style Syncon (pre-72!) - in a local hall that
people slept over in; own catering; boy scout type loos and
shower (both had a shower curtain and you had to call as you
entered the area in case either were in use). Only big
difference was there was one man and forty women there... in
those days, it would have been forty men and one woman and she
would have been attached to a man in some way (unless she was
Shayne McCormack). He, by the way, was not attached to any of
the women present but was a female/female slash fan and took the
opportunity to raid the slash libraries and get recommendations
for stories and zines, and to write"

THE MARK TIME AWARDS
Jerry Stearns
The American Society for Science Fiction Audio announces the
winners of the fourth annual Mark Time Awards. We are pleased to
be able to present this award for the best science fiction audio
productions of the year.
The Gold Mark Time goes to "407 Arachne", a hard science story in
classic style. Three astronauts returning from a six-month
expedition to Mars make amazing discoveries and must struggle to
survive in space. The judges especially liked the rich and
believable soundscape in which the story occurs. Written by
Canadian Brian d'Eon, the program was produced in Minneapolis for
the SoundStories: Audio Theater Company by Jerry Stearns, and
directed by Jennifer Arave. (For more information see

The Silver Mark Time goes to "Time Out For Bill Lizard", which
was first broadcast last year on Irish National Radio. The work
was written and produced by Roger Gregg, an American living in
Dublin, Ireland. He also performed all the voices. In this first
adventure of a proposed series, Bill Lizard encounters a strange
mobile phone which randomly plunges Lizard into parallel worlds
each time it rings. The judges were impressed with the high
energy of the performances and the production.
And ASFSFA is pleased to present the second annual Ogle Award for
the best fantasy/horror audio production of the year. (Charles
Ogle played the monster in Thomas Edison's 1910 film of
"Frankenstein.")
The Gold Ogle is given this year to "Back To Frankenstein",
produced for the student radio station at the University of
California at Davis. Les Light is the writer and producer of this
lighthearted story of a college student who borrows a time
machine to go back and talk to Mary Shelley about her book
"Frankenstein" in order to do a book report for her classes. She
meets not only the the author, but Dr. Frankenstein and the
monster. It is a fast moving and ambitious production.
And ASFSFA is very proud to present the third Grand Master Award
for lifetime contribution to SF&F audio to Yuri Rasovsky. Yuri
has done dozens of science fiction and fantasy works in his 30
years producing audio drama. The first one I heard was an
adaptation of Heinlein's "By His Bootstraps" done in 1984 with
Richard Dreyfus as nearly everybody. In 1999 he released a very
scary production of "The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari." Currently Mr.
Rasovsky is producing "Beyond 2000", an anthology series of 26
hour-long classic SF stories for NPR. Find out more about this

fiction and fantasy audio theater - a medium where almost
everything is left to the imagination.
